Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge certain decisions made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
