Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
- Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
