Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
