The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
